Acrylic On Canvas

 40 x 28 x 1.75

I didn’t have any set concepts for this work other than a certain color palette, but the more I look at it, I can’t help but see an unfolding process of mineral formation. The weaving bands of color are currents of minerals intertwining and changing to create new geological forms. If a rock captures a still moment in time where heat, pressure and chemistry all act together to produce that exact chunk that you’re beholding, then oddly enough I see this still inanimate painting as the turbulent moment before everything stabilizes. This moment when magma rushes towards the earth's surface and burns through minerals that begin to flow and run into one another, forming something entirely different than what was there before.

My abstract paintings are inspired by Rorschach tests and are part of an ongoing project to document the subjectivity of perception. Like cloud watching, people always see different images within these paintings. At times their visual projection is a shared experience, but mostly, we’re never looking at the exact same picture. The ongoing question is, what are the sources for people’s unique responses? I have come to include memory, mood and degree of imagination.
